RYA Training Courses in Cornwall: Elevate Your Maritime Career
Whether you are a seasoned commercial fisherman looking to upskill, or a newcomer aiming to launch a professional career at sea, finding the right RYA training in Cornwall is your first step toward success. At Seafood Cornwall Training, based in the heart of Newlyn, we bridge the gap between recreational excellence and commercial necessity. Our Royal Yachting Association (RYA) accredited courses are designed to provide the technical precision and safety standards required by the modern maritime industry.
Why Choose RYA Courses for a Commercial Career?
In the competitive world of the Cornish fishing industry and the wider maritime sector, a basic safety certificate is often just the beginning. To progress into leadership roles—such as becoming a Skipper or a Deck Officer—advanced navigation and technical certifications are essential.
The RYA is globally recognized as the gold standard for maritime training. For those working on the water, these courses offer more than just a certificate; they provide a pathway to commercial endorsement. This legal qualification allows you to work professionally on British-flagged vessels, from charter fishing boats and workboats to superyacht tenders and small passenger craft.
Training for the Cornwall Commercial Fishing Industry
At Seafood Cornwall Training, we understand the unique demands of the commercial fishing industry. We aren’t just a training center; we are part of the Newlyn community. We know that taking time off for training means time away from the grounds, which is why we offer:
Accessible Locations: While our hub is in Newlyn, we facilitate training across Cornwall to make it as convenient as possible for working crews.
Grant Funding Support: We work closely with organizations like Seafish and the CFPO to help active commercial fishermen access training grants. In many cases, your RYA training can be significantly subsidized or even fully funded.
Expert Instructors: Our trainers are industry veterans who understand the practical realities of working on a commercial deck, not just the theory in a book.
GMDSS VHF Short Range Certificate
The Short Range Certificate is the qualification required by law if you operate a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on any British vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio.
Available in classroom or as an online course.

This course includes all the theory to progress to the practical examination for the RYA Coastal Skipper or RYA Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore Certificates of Competency.

This one-day training session will make use of our RYA approved Radar Simulator equipment to help you learn the principles and applications of RADAR.

RYA FAQs
Why do you offer RYA courses?
We are an approved RYA Training Centre
Are there grants available for fishermen to take RYA courses?
As a specialist training provider for the Cornish fishing fleet, we often have access to funding (such as via Seafish or the CFPO) for active commercial fishermen looking to upskill. If you are taking an RYA course to further your professional career—such as a Diesel Engine or Radar course—get in touch with us to see if you are eligible for a training grant.
Which RYA courses are accepted for the Seafish Under 16.5m Skipper’s Certificate?
Under MGN 411, the MCA accepts certain RYA qualifications as alternatives to Seafish modules. For example, an RYA Yachtmaster Coastal certificate can be used in place of the 2-day Seafish Bridge Watchkeeping course (for certificates up to 20 miles), while the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore is accepted for the unrestricted (beyond 20 miles) Skipper’s Certificate.
I am a commercial fisherman; why should I take an RYA course?
While basic Seafish safety courses are mandatory for all crew, RYA qualifications like Day Skipper or Yachtmaster provide the advanced navigation and seamanship skills required to progress into leadership roles. These courses are often used as an alternative route to gain the Under 16.5m Skipper’s Certificate, which is essential if you want to take command of your own vessel or work as a relief skipper.
Can RYA courses be used for "Commercial Endorsement"?
Yes. Many of our RYA certificates—including Level 2 Powerboat Handling, Advanced Powerboat, and Yachtmaster—can be commercially endorsed by the RYA and MCA. This allows you to work professionally on British-flagged vessels subject to the MCA’s codes of practice, such as charter fishing boats, workboats, and small passenger craft up to 24 meters.
Do I need an RYA Marine Radio (SRC) certificate to work commercially?
Absolutely. Every commercial vessel with a VHF radio must have at least one person on board who holds a valid GMDSS Short Range Certificate (SRC). Our RYA-approved Marine Radio course is the standard industry qualification for this, ensuring you are legally compliant and capable of handling emergency communications at sea.
