Course Overview

The Medical Care updater course is a refresher course for the “proficiency in Medical care on board” course which has a validity of 5 years. If you held or currently hold that certificate then this course is for you. 

Held over 3 days, this course refreshes the knowledge of Medical first Aid and Medical care onboard, ensuring the candidate

Course Content

  • Casualty examination and assessment
  • First aid in the event of accident or illness on board
  • Examination, diagnosis and treatment of adult
  • Recognition and treatment of common medical conditions in respiratory, cardiac and abdominal systems
  • Recognition and knowledge of symptoms and treatment of life threatening situations including: drowning and asphyxia; cardiac arrest; fracture and other injuries; effects of heat and cold; burns and scalds; spinal injuries
  • Sources of reference information and resources for providing medical care
  • Use of medical equipment and medical stores and maintenance
  • Protection against infection and the spread of diseases
  • Procedures for evacuation of a patient
  • Procedure for Medical assistance by radio
  • Importance of monitoring and record keeping
  • Ongoing care and supervision on board

Practical and written exam

This course also requires:

  • Passport size photo with candidate’s name on the back
  • Be over the age of 16
  • Proficiency in Medical Care on Board  STCW certificates

Certificates for similar courses or First Aid at Sea or the Ships Captains Medical achieved prior to the STCW95 will not meet the prerequisite requirement for this course

  • Certificates will be sent directly to candidates on completion of the exam.
