Course Overview

Proficiency in Designated Security Duties PDSD is a one day course that provides those undertaking designated security duties on board ship with the essential training, education, understanding and proficiency requirements.

The course covers why ship security is important, the roles and responsibilities of the organisations and individuals involved in ship security, what constitutes a security risk, threat and vulnerability to the ship, its personnel, cargo and operations, and the capabilities and limitations of security methods, equipment and systems.

Proficiency in Designated Security Duties, as outlined in the STCW Convention and Code, is a mandatory requirement for seafarers who are assigned specific security-related responsibilities on board a vessel. This course is designed to ensure that crew members possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and awareness to support the ship’s security framework in accordance with international maritime regulations.

The STCW Proficiency in Designated Security Duties course focuses on understanding maritime security threats, including piracy, armed robbery, terrorism, stowaways, and sabotage. Participants are trained to recognize security risks and vulnerabilities, enabling them to respond appropriately to potential incidents. A key element of the course is familiarization with the Ship Security Plan (SSP), including individual roles and responsibilities during different security levels.

Proficiency also involves the ability to conduct security-related tasks such as monitoring restricted areas, controlling access to the vessel, supervising embarkation and disembarkation, and assisting with security patrols. The course emphasizes the importance of maintaining vigilance, reporting security concerns promptly, and following established procedures to prevent unauthorized access or breaches.

Effective communication is another critical component of the training. Seafarers learn how to communicate security-related information clearly and accurately to the Ship Security Officer and other crew members, particularly during heightened security situations. The course also addresses proper responses to security incidents, including emergency preparedness and coordination with port facility security personnel.

In addition, the STCW PDSD course highlights the importance of professionalism, ethical behavior, and compliance with international and company security policies. Through training and assessment, seafarers develop the confidence and competence required to perform their designated security duties effectively. Ultimately, proficiency in these duties enhances the overall safety and security of the ship, its crew, cargo, and the marine environment.
