Seafood Cornwall Training is running a new project working with fishermen on all aspects of sea safety. Clive Palfrey has joined the SCT Team as Safety Adviser to work closely with fishermen throughout Cornwall with the aim to improve safety knowledge and share good practice and solutions. Funding to deliver this project is thanks to Seafarers UK, and EU Funding through Cornwall & Isles of Scilly FLAG.
Safety Adviser Clive Palfrey, visiting Newlyn this week, explained “Because I have been a fisherman myself, and also an instructor, I will be taking a practical hands-on approach, visiting their boats and listening to fishermen closely. We are here in an advisory capacity to help, not judge. And offer a free service to all Cornish fishermen, from large company vessels to small inshore handliners”. He will be in other Cornish ports over the next few weeks and months.
Richard Caslake, Seafish SW, is chair of the SW Fishing Safety Forum which works alongside this project. “Clive is an excellent addition to the team at Seafood Cornwall Training. Clive’s understanding of the industry in the SW paired his experience as a fisherman and with the RNLI make him an ideal candidate to deliver fishing safety initiatives in Cornwall”.
