Looe Harbour Commissioners (LHC) has just secured £109,000 of grant funding from the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) to construct a quayside centre on West Looe quay that will aim to connect the fishing, tourism and wider community together.
Rick Stein has honoured the staff and directors of Seafood Cornwall Training for their service to the fishing industry by presenting them with a liferaft donated by Viking during the Newlyn Fish Festival.
Based in Newlyn, the Seafish Approved Training provider has assisted the Cornish fish industry across Cornwall, through the provision of fishermen’s basic safety training, 16.5m skipper’s ticket courses as well as short courses to add value and skills throughout the industry.
Rick Stein commented, “I’m really pleased to be supporting Seafood Cornwall Training. It’s important to recognise the work that Simon, Sarah and Emma have put in to help provide local fishermen with the dedicated skills training they need to improve safety and efficiency at sea, which in turn has helped develop the Cornish fishing industry as a whole.”
Twenty five young people from Cornwall’s fishing community have been equipped with essential lifesaving skills following the success of a new, one day ‘sea safety’ course developed and delivered by Seafood Cornwall Training, Cornwall’s dedicated Fish Industry Training School based in Newlyn.
The training took place at Carn Brea Leisure Centre, Pool, Redruth on the 2nd & 3rd August, attended by participants from across Cornwall; from Penzance, the Lizard to St Austell. The training was provided free of charge, thanks to the support of the Cornish Fish Producers Organisation (CFPO) and Falfish, Cornwall’s largest fish processing company.
Sixty-two pupils from St Catherine’s Church of England Primary School, Launceston, visited Newlyn last week on a fact finding visit organised by Seafood Cornwall Training and sponsored by local fish processor Falfish. The visit was designed to complement classroom studies and bring pupils face to face with where the fish they eat, comes from. The children have been learning all about fishing and seafood as part of the ‘Fish for the Future’ unit, developed by Sense of Place.
