Super New Gig for St Ives Community
St Ives Fishing Community Association (SIFCA), a relatively new group, has been remarkably successful with a funding bid to the European Fisheries Fund. They received £7,500 to purchase their own fiberglass rowing gig, which was launched on Saturday 9 August in front of the Sloop Inn, St Ives.
The aim of the Association is to encourage wider engagement within the community and use the gig as a way of bringing individuals, friends, families and groups together to promote health, welfare and social inclusion. Working closely with the St Ives Gig Club, the gig will be placed on a mooring in the harbour, which will offer members easy access throughout the summer months.
The gig has been funded by a European Fisheries Fund application through the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG), along with several local businesses providing match funding. The association would like to thank its sponsors and supporters; The Sloop, Celtic Fish & Game, Matthew Stevens & Son, St Ives Town Council, Consols Oils and Cornwall Rural Community Charity (CRCC).
Richard Robinson, President of SIFCA said “It’s fantastic to be able to have our own training gig moored in the harbour. Many of our members are fishermen and do not work regular hours, which restricts them from engaging with other community clubs and local events. We are encouraging anyone who has an interest to join us and become a member of the Association and to make the most of this great opportunity.”
The Association is open to any members of the St Ives harbour community. Membership is £20 and forms can be found at the harbour office in St Ives. For more information about FLAG opportunities, please contact Chris on 01736 364324 or viaChris.ranford@cornwallrcc.org.uk
