Fishermen's Basic Safety Training These courses are a mandatory requirement for all fishermen working aboard a commercial fishing vessel.
- Basic Sea Survival
- Health and Safety (for new entrants - those with less than 2 years experience)
- Basic Fire Fighting for Fishermen
- Basic 1st Aid for Fishermen
- Safety Awareness (all fishermen are required to complete this course after gaining 2 years experience at sea)
We have helped people source funding from The Princes Trust and from PCDT in Penzance in order to complete these courses free of charge.
Under 16.5m Skippers Ticket
The under 16.5m skippers ticket will entitle the holder to skipper a UK-registered commercial fishing vessel of less than 16.5 metres. The MCA have advised that it will become a mandatory requirement for all skippers of vessels under 16.5m to hold the full qualification.

- Basic Sea Survival
- Basic Fire Fighting for Fishermen
- Basic 1st Aid for Fishermen
- Safety Awareness
- 1 day Intermediate Stability Awareness
- 1 day GMDSS SRC (VHF) (old, non GMDSS licences will need updating)
- 2 or 5 day Navigation and Watchkeeping* (if working beyond 20nm, 5 day course is required)
- 2 Day Engineering (online test available)
Fishermen will be able to complete training free of charge* however please be aware this funding is limited and may be cancelled at any time. (see funding page - DfT funding). You need to have completed all the basic safety courses including Safety Awareness to be eligible for funding.
