Description

This course is intended for anyone taking a navigational watch and skippers of vessels less than 16.5m operating beyond 20 miles from a safe haven.
Mandatory: No - Voluntary at present
Under 16.5m Skippers Ticket
Successful completion of this 5 day course together with completion of the 1 day stability course and the 1 or 2 day engineering course and the GMDSS Short Range (Radio Operators) Certificate will complete the overall requirements for the Under 16.5m Skippers Ticket certificate which the MCA proposes to make mandatory in 2010.
Funding:
Thanks to support from the Department for Transport and the European Fisheries Fund, Seafish is currently able to fund the tuition fee for this course for experienced fishermen providing they hold certificates in Sea Survival, First Aid, Fire Fighting and Safety Awareness. Course Aim:
To provide participants with the skills and knowledge necessary for competent Watchkeeping.
On completion of this course you should be able to:
Explain the principles of watchkeeping
Understand the rules of the road
Explain principles of safe navigation
Explain the uses and limitations of electronic navigational aids
Explain the IALA buoyage system
Understand lights, shapes and sounds in navigation
Understand vessel emergency procedures
On completion of this course you will be able to use charts to accurately:
Find positions (Lat. and Long.
Use scales and chart data
Use manual position fixing methods
Use compass bearings and transits
Determine course considerations (tide, leeway, set and drift)
Determine water and ground tracks
Estimate positions with course made good
Estimate positions with speed made good
Examination type:
On-going practical assessment of chartwork skills
Final end test
40 multiple choice and short answer questions

Description
Please park in the Newlyn Harbour Car Park and purchase a full day ticket.
Turn right out of the car park and walk back through the village with the fish market on your right hand side until you reach the junction with Jewell's Fish and Chip Shop on your left.
Turn left up Chywoone (Paul) Hill and walk 100 yards.The Centre is on the left hand side of the road.
