Before any new entrant goes to sea it is important that they are provided with a full introduction to the health and safety issues associated with working on a fishing vessel.   This course has been designed to provide this basic health and safety training, introducing the key safety areas associated with fishing.  It also covers the main requirement of STCW table A-V1 / 1 - 4 which specifies the minimum standard of competence required by fishermen, in personal safety and social responsibilities.

New Entrants should complete this mandatory Basic Health and Safety Course at the same time as the Basic Sea Survival course before going to sea for the first time, experienced fishermen should complete the Safety Awareness course instead.
All fishermen are then required to complete an MCA approved Fire Fighting and First Aid course within 3 months.

Continual assessment.

MCA Compliance:
This course has been designed and has been approved to conform to the requirements laid down by the MCA.
All our instructors have been approved by the Seafish Industry Authority.

Course Certificate:
The Seafish Industry Authority on behalf of the MCA will issue a course certificate to those who complete the course successfully.

Description

On arrival in Newlyn, please park in the Newlyn Harbour Car Park and ensure you purchase a full day ticket.
Make your way to the Fishermen's Mission by turning right out of the harbour car park and walk back through the village with the Fish Market on your right hand side.

The Fishermen's Mission will then be on your right after 50 yards.
Training will take place upstairs in the Chapel.
