Maths teachers met at Newlyn Fish Market to explore maths in the fishing industry. After an early morning tour of the Market and breakfast at the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen, they visited Seafood Cornwall Training Ltd where Andy Wheeler talked them through current fishing methods, conservation, and the species landed at Newlyn, legislation and the use of graphs, charts and navigation. The idea of the visit came from Simon Jack, Head of Maths at St Ives. "A group of us are working together to develop resources to use in school which relate directly to local industry and are relevant to Cornish students" said Simon "I have a much greater understanding of the use of maths in the fishing industry" said Mark Burley from Cape Cornwall School. "The fishing industry offers lots of opportunities to equate maths to real-world use" "The event was funded through the ‘Shape the Future' Steps at Work project - which aims to raise awareness amongst young people and their influencers of science, technology, maths and engineering as a career option and an exciting and essential part of modern Britain" said Helen Field from Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership, who organised the visit. "We were delighted to welcome the teachers to explore the fishing industry to explore ways of using maths. We are keen to promote fish, fishing and the many opportunities within the industry to young people."
