100% grant funding is available once again for fishermen to attend courses that make up the Under 16.5m Skippers Ticket,  HOWEVER, we cannot confirm that this funding will be available beyond March 2012.

Fishermen wishing to complete the short courses that make up the new skippers ticket are advised to contact us asap, in order to secure places on courses, as demand is likely to be strong between January and March 2012.

Dates are published on the "Course Dates" page as they are confirmed, additional dates are regularly scheduled according to demand, so drop us a line if you wish to be put on the list.

How do they work?

Individual grants are available through Seafish Approved Training Providers eg. Seafood Cornwall Training to attend training free of charge. A refundable deposit will be required to secure a place on a course.
On completion of the relevent courses below, fishermen can apply for either the "Silver" or "Gold" standard, 16.5m Skippers Ticket.

Courses that need to be completed in order to attain the "Silver" standard 16.5m Skippers Ticket

• 2-day (Seafish) Navigation and Bridge Watchkeeping course
• 2-day (Seafish) Engineroom Watchkeeping course (online test available)
  
• 1-day (Seafish) Intermediate Stability course
• 1-day (RYA) GMDSS SRC course

Courses that need to be completed in order to attain the "Gold" standard 16.5m Skippers Ticket

• 5-day ( Seafish) Navigation and Bridge Watchkeeping course
• 2-day (Seafish) Engineroom Watchkeeping Course (online test available)
• 1-day (seafish) Intermediate Stability Course
  
• 1-day (RYA) GMDSS SRC course

Grants of up to £1000 are also available for fishermen undertaking MCA Fishing Vessel (Deck and Engineer Officer) Certificates of Competency. Fishermen need to apply for these grants from Seafish, although Seafood Cornwall Training is happy to assist you with completing the forms.

Funding Application process for under 16.5m skippers ticket courses

* Candidate contacts Seafood Cornwall Training Ltd for training dates and details
* Centre checks whether candidate is eligible for funding eg. holds all basic safety certificates. (see below)
* Candidate completes funding application form
* Centre seeks funding approval from seafish on trainees behalf
* If successful, candidate is booked on course and completes training free of charge

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for funded training applicants must be:

• aged 18 or above
• fishermen currently working (or having previously worked) on a UK-registered fishing vessel
• fishermen who has completed all four mandatory basic safety training courses (sea survival, first aid, fire fighting and safety awareness)
• fishermen with at least 12 months fishing experience
• able to provide a valid National Insurance number

Attendance
• All attendees must sign an attendance sheet on each day of training
