The current state of fishing communities across the UK is as varied as those who continue to live and fish in these areas. Some coastal communities continue to maintain their way of life, while others struggle. Some have found opportunities in tourism and heritage, while others face broader social issues. Cornwall Rural Community Charity (CRCC) has worked extensively with local coastal communities and supported the development of numerous initiatives to address challenges in the fishing sector and with fishing families. We want to extend the same opportunities to fishing communities across the UK, but to do these we need to recognize the local concerns affecting life and work.
The on-line survey is available now, so get involved. We want to understand community and individual needs and challenges better, and to identify examples of projects or activities that are working to tackle these. The survey is not just for current fishermen and crews, but retired fishermen and fishing families. If you can, please share this on Facebook or Twitter, and help spread the message further. We hope by sharing ideas and experiences we can help better target support and resources where it can make a genuine difference.

Free Fish Quality and Production Cooking Workshop Invitation: Tuesday 28 November at Duchy College, Stoke Climsland PL17 8PB
Seafish, Duchy College and City and Guilds will be co-hosting a workshop for fish friers and seafood chefs on apprenticeships. This is an opportunity for employers to find out about a new apprenticeship opportunity, learn about quality assessment and to fill in any gaps they may have regarding food safety or health and safety training. And it is all for free.
At the workshop, we will provide information about the production cooking trailblazer apprenticeship, plus other hospitality apprenticeships that should be of interest to this sector of the seafood industry.
In the afternoon there will be a short (3 hr) training course in fish quality assessment for fish friers and chefs.

For anyone wanting to achieve a level 2 Food Safety or Health and Safety qualification, there’s the option to sit their exam, provided they have completed a course of study ahead of the 28th. If they study one of the Seafish online programmes, there will be no charge to sit the exam. If they opt to use Seafish printed Open Learning modules or wish to sit their exam at a different time, there will be a small administration charge. Examinations will be scheduled at 9am at Duchy College in the Parsons building. Completion of the appropriate Open Learning programme is required for entry to the exams. Successful candidates will be awarded an Elementary Food Hygiene or Health & Safety certificate from the Royal Environmental Health Institute for Scotland.

As part of research undertaken by the University of York and the New Economics Foundation, we are asking fishers, fisheries managers and other fisheries stakeholders to complete a short survey relating to the definition of small-scale fishing in England.
